Why Is Childhood so Important free essay sample

Our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. † We know nothing of what happened before our birth, and we certainly know nothing of what will happen after we die. Movies, slide shows, and accounts of what life was like in other times are all fascinating to contemplate, but we cannot ever truly know what it is like to exist outside of our lifespan. The only period of time over which we have any influence is our own, and that is why life should be enjoyed as heartily as possible. Most people, in some form or another, can appreciate the transience of life. That is why expressions like â€Å"you only live once† exist. However, many of the same people that maintain a free-spirited philosophy when they are young consent to adult civility when they are older as if it were a necessary next stage of life. We will write a custom essay sample on Why Is Childhood so Important or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page â€Å"When we were kids, we had some crazy times† says the retired party person, now forty and unenthusiastic about his career and life. There are two related mistakes in this type of thinking. The first is not understanding what living in the present means, and the second is accepting that it has to end. Living in the present means appreciating your life. It is often strictly interpreted as simply â€Å"having fun. † Yet fun is only one aspect of appreciating life; things like enjoying books, building friendships, and falling in love though not strictly classified as â€Å"fun† are still wonderful ways to appreciate life. There are countless other activities that would gladden the nostalgic adult reflecting on his younger years. Of all of the ways people enjoy their lives, none are looked back on as fondly as those that took place before the age of eleven or twelve years old. This is because before that age, the veil of security that protects children, otherwise known as the â€Å"innocence of childhood,† still existed. These early, protected years of childhood are, to me, the most beautiful in all of life. Uncomplicated by thoughts of death, sex, and malice, young children experience the pure highs and lows of human emotion without the depth of understanding that makes being an adult so scary. The high-pitched squeals of laughter emitted by young children are inimitable; adults simply know too much to be that ecstatic. Even the fears of childhood are more tolerable than grown-up fears, for they can be calmed by a parental embrace, and at the very least they are recognized and reacted to. Adults do not wail and cry when they are afraid and as a result, their fears sometimes do not heal. The innocence of childhood gives rise to experiences that surpass all others in their emotional power. Even the teenage years, because they are so filled with insecurity, allow for a great range of feeling. But around the age of twenty-one or twenty-two, when most of the uncertainty of adolescence has been dispelled, people start to settle into an adult routine as well as an adult range of feeling. Childhood glee is replaced by merriment measured in glasses of liquor, and sobbing is replaced by â€Å"holding it in. † The reason usually cited for this change is the start of a career. Once you enter the work world, adult conventions such as etiquette and professionalism become the social norm, and life becomes a lot more stable and a lot less joyful. There are, of course, plenty of happy moments among this prosaic fog, but they become the exception rather than the rule. When you’re a child, you are excited about life by default you only calm down when you are forced to sit still, or eat your peas, or listen to the teacher. When you are an adult, you are â€Å"just fine† by default, and must plan outings and other instances of excitement. Childhood is the source of our ability to imagine, our hope, and our greatest thrills. It is imperative for us to retain it, and if we cannot, we should at least capture it in memory and re-animate it for ourselves and others. Those that resign to a tranquil adult existence give up their greatest means of appreciating life. We are all playing between two voids the one we came from, and the one we will meet. It is impossible to know whether or not we matter in the larger picture. The only way to add meaning to our lives is to have children, and to instill them with the same specialness that we felt when we were young. The hope is that they will do the same for their kids, and their kids will do the same for their kids, and on and on. But we never know what will happen. In a sense, the best we can do is put our message into a bottle and throw it into the ocean, dreaming that it will get picked up and affect many others. In the meantime, we should live life slowly, and revel in the magic that we already have.

Peculiarities of Africa And The West

Question: What accounts for the rather late emergence of African countries as independent nation-states? Is there something peculiar about Africa that delayed its drive for independence? Answer: Africa was subjected to colonialism for a long period. The Dark Continent was colonized by the French, Belgians, and the British. Most of the countries got independence in the 1960s. The Second World War played a vital role in weakening imperial power in the colonies. The two Great Powers has lost their status due to the war and weakened it economically and politically. West African countries like Nigeria and Cape Verda became economically dominant in the 1960s. The British exploitation had reached its height and hence the educated elites comprising lawyers, businesspeople and teachers. The United Nations was a major contributor to the development. 17 African states joined in the United Nations in 1960. It was in this year that the decision of decolonization was taken (Brower Sanders 2013). The World War had a huge impact on these powerful colonizers. British shifted its focus from the colonies to its country. The war had drained the wealth of the nation and hence faced major defeat at the hands of its colonies. There were drastic political and social changes and Africans took a more active part in politics and economics. They were gaining administrative powers. There was an emergence of African leaders, and the colony was getting opportunities in education and economy. Moreover, the Depression of the 1930s also proved detrimental for the colonial powers. It was during these years that people of Africa started exploring the vast resources that the Continent possessed. These processes took place in the latter half of the twentieth century and were drivers of colonialism (Loomba 2015). References Brower, D. R., Sanders, T. International Marketing Essays (944 words) - Marketing,

International Marketing International Marketing Proctor & Gamble originated in 1837, when William Proctor and James Gamble formed a partnership in Cincinnati, Ohio. The partnership flourished making the company a gaining name as principled manufacturer of high quality consumer goods sold at competitive prices. By 1992 Proctor & Gamble was a multinational company with annual sales of almost $30 billion profits exceeding $1.8 billion, and a reputation for quality products, high integrity, strong marketing, and conservative management. When P&G grew they became more and more interested in foreign markets. In 1992 they had sold their products in more than 140 countries around the world. In 1991 Ps tissue division. Facelle was a medium sized manufacturer and marketer of tissue, towel and sanitary products. So for 185 million P&G bought the Facelle Co. Proctor & Gamble had to consider many things when entering the market in Canada. Tissue products were inexpensive, widely used and were frequently purchased (on average once every two weeks.) Brand switching was high and the risks with product failure were low. The only thing that manufacturers had to worry about was to differentiate their products on performance to build loyalty. Retailers felt that the paper was a low profit, low loyalty category. They used it primarily to draw consumers into their stores. Royale had been the only 3ply tissue on the market, and was viewed as the traditional strong, premium quality facial tissue. Florelle was a 2ply tissue that had received little promotional attention. It lost most of its market share in 1991 and was down 5.8% at the beginning of 92. Other competing brands of tissue were Kimberly Clark with their Kleenex brand, which had a very good year in 1991. Scott tissue who at first fell a few shares due to loss of trade support, but relaunched their brand in September 1991, positioning it as a product with high content of recycle material, and supporting it with heavy advertising. Irving and all others had average an average year. Brand Image for Royale based upon its premium positioning, historically unique 3ply product design and its softness claim, and had built the leading brand image in the product category. Brand users gave Royale an overall score of 85 on a scale of 100, marginally superior to Kleenex. Even though Royal enjoyed a very favorable overall brand image, they were lacking on thing that would make their product do even better. Knowledge about the brand was not as high as they would have liked. Many people who used it didnt even know that it was a 3ply tissue rather than a 2ply. This brand image did not translate to market share. Royale was used as a part-time brand that was bought on feature or specifically for cold care, but seldom for regular usage around the household. Also Royales price exceeded Kleenexs by more than $.20 when Kleenex dropped to $0.79 after the introduction of Kleenexs 150s. Florelle a standard 2ply tissue brand offered specialty sizes (pocket packs, man-size, and cube format). P&G felt the need to upgrade the softness of Facelle tissue by adding eucalyptus fibre and sacrificing some tissue strength since Facelle was one of the strongest tissues on the market. The one problem with the upgrade was deciding whether to keep the product name of Facelle and just say it is better, or change it to Royal some how distinguishing the 3ply from the 2ply. They decided to introduce the product under the name Puffs. Puffs, which had been successfully launched in the U.S twenty years ago, not yet introduced in Canada, would still do well due to Advertising spills from the U.S. Proctor and Gambles results to the research regarding consumer perception of Royale and Facelle were not good. Even though Royale was one of the leading brands in

Assessment Methods Essays

Assessment Methods Essays Assessment Methods Essay Assessment Methods Essay The different assessment methods that are available are diagnostic, formative, summative, ipsative and norm-referenced. Assessment is a way to be able to discover how much learning has taken place in each session which i can then identify how much knowledge and skills have been gained by the students. It is essential to begin a course with an assessment of studentsâ„ ¢ prior learning in order for the teacher to pitch their teaching at the correct level and to ensure inclusion of all students learning needs. Before each student is accepted on to a course an initial assessment is taken place. This is called a diagnostic assessment. This is carried out to ensure that they are applying for the right course and level of qualification. This kind of assessment is based on maths and literacy which uses ICT to evaluate the learners before they enrol. In my practical lessons I always start with an assignment brief indicating and illustrating the tasks required for the workshop. Then the students will identify the risks in carrying out the work and the correct PPE to be worn to reduce the risks. My learners then identify the tools and materials required and list these in a requisition sheet. We will then go through this process as a whole group, with me asking questions to the whole group and individuals, this assessing allows me to see what learning has happened. Then I will demonstrate the tasks whilst questioning my learners to evaluate their knowledge on the tools and how to use them safely. I carry out a visual observation on each student as they attempt to do the task demonstrated -giving advice on how to improve and progress. Their work is then assessed, according to the set tolerances, by themselves initially and then me . Sometimes, depending on the task, if I notice, when observing a student, that they have made a slight mistake, then I will let it pass and see if they notice and can identify where they went wrong and if they can correct it. This is also a good opportunity to hold one-to-one or small group questioning. When assessing in my theory lessons I use a range of different methods. These can include questionnaire sheets, pop quizzes, class assignments work sheets as a group or as individual, multiple choice questions, videoed interviews, case studies and portfolios, depending on the subject. Personally I enjoy the classroom assignments as these are usually looking at a specific task which can carried out over a couple of sessions. I am able to give attention to all in the group and give sometimes examples of how tasks are relevant to the industry. Record keeping is an important key role of a teacher and the main aspect is to assist planning and set future learning goals to the learner. There are a number of ways of recording this information, depending on the course. These include tracker sheets from the awarding institutions, awarding bodies assignment feedback sheet, your own trackers/ feedback sheets, students discussion notes, employerâ„ ¢s feedback sheet, individual learning plans and copies of the learnerâ„ ¢s work. I complete a feedback sheet designed by my department for each assignment so that I can prove that the learner has carried out this task and been assessed. For my practical assignments I use a tick box against tolerances with comment boxes by each tolerance as well and at the end. Each assessment is also recorded on a tracking sheet so that progress can be easily checked for the individual or the group as a whole. My learners also produce a portfolio of evidence, which includes all the assessed work and photo evidence of any practical work carried out. These records show to the learners and awarding bodies how they are progressing and that we care and log their progress. They are also proof in case the learner loses their work, need to be kept to meet awarding bodies requirements, show that work has been internally and externally verified, meet inspection requirements and meet department and college requirements. All these records are important in proving the learnerâ„ ¢s achievements and have to be kept for a number of years.
