The Simpsons Is One Of Americas Most Popular Television Shows. It Rank

The Simpsons is one of Americas most popular television shows. It ranks as the number one television program for viewers under eighteen years of age. However, the ideals that The Simpsons conveys are not always wholesome, sometimes not even in good taste. It is inevitable that The Simpsons is affecting children. Matt Groening took up drawing to escape from his troubles in 1977. At the time, Groening was working for the L.A. Reader, a free weekly newspaper. He began working on Life in Hell, a humorous comic strip consisting of people with rabbit ears. The L.A. Reader picked up a copy of his comic strip and liked what they saw. Life in Hell gradually became a common comic strip in many free weeklies and college newspapers across the country. It even developed a cult status. (Varhola, 1) Life in Hell drew the attention of James L. Brooks, producer of works such as Taxi, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Terms of Endearment. Brooks originally wanted Groening to make an animated pilot of Life in Hell. Groening chose not to do so in fear of loosing royalties from papers that printed the strip. Groening presented Brooks with an overweight, balding father, a mother with a blue beehive hairdo, and three obnoxious spiky haired children. Groening intended for them to represent the typical American family "who love each other and drive each other crazy". Groening named the characters after his own family. His parents were named Homer and Margaret and he had two younger sisters named Lisa and Maggie. Bart was an anagram for "brat". Groening chose the last name "Simpson" to sound like the typical American family name. (Varhola, 2) Brooks decided to put the 30 or 60 second animations on between skits on The Tracy Ullman Show on the unsuccessful Fox network. Cast members Dan Castellaneta and Julie Kavner did the voices of Homer and Marge. Yeardley Smith (later to star in Herman's Head) did the voice of Lisa. Nancy Cartwright did the voice of Bart. Cartwright previously supplied the voices for many cartoons, including Galaxy High, Fantastic Max, Richie Rich, Snorks, Pound Puppies, My Little Pony, and Glo-Friends. Tracy Ullman later added Cartwright to her cast. (Dale and Trich, 11) Brooks, Groening, and Sam Simon, Tracy Ullman's producer, wanted to turn the Simpson family into their own show. The Fox network was looking for material to appeal to younger viewers. The only show they had that drew a young audience was Married With Children. To Fox's pleasure, The Simpsons saved the network from near failure. (Varhola, 3) On December 17, 1989, The Simpsons got their break. The Christmas special, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" aired. (Dale and Trich, 19) In the episode, Bart got a tattoo, much to Marge's dislike. She quickly spent all of the family's Christmas money to remove Bart's tattoo with a laser. At the same time, Homer, still on his morning coffee break at 4:00 in the afternoon, learns that he will not receive a Christmas bonus. When he learns that Marge is relying on the money for Christmas, he decides that he will do the Christmas shopping for the year. He quickly buys Marge panty hose, Bart paper, Lisa crayons, and Maggie a dog toy. When he realizes that he is not doing very well, he gets a second job as a mall Santa for the extra money. On the way home from work, he steals a Christmas tree. The next day at the mall, Bart sits on his Dad's lap and pulls down his beard. Homer responds by choking Bart and making him help make Christmas better. On Christmas Eve, Homer receives his check, $13.70 for over 40 hours work. Homer takes Bart to the dog track as a final chance for Christmas money. They discovered a gem in the third r ace, Santa's Little Helper. How could this dog loose on Christmas Eve? During her time in there she would learn about the poisons she would later write about in some of her books. During the war her sister, Margaret, challenged Agatha to write a mystery story the reader couldnt solve. Agatha accepted the challenge because the thought it would be a good way to alleviate boredom. The Mysterious Affair at Styles was the first mystery novel that Agatha Christie wrote. However, it was not very well accepted. Agatha sent it to many publishing companies and only Bodley Head, a company Agatha forgot she had sent the book to, would accept it. An Investigation Into The Eight Queens Problem Essays - Chess An Investigation into the Eight Queens Problem Introduction The eight queens problem relies on a very simple chess-based concept. However, no chess knowledge, other than this background, is required. Chess is a game plajghyed on a 8 by 8 grid of 64 squares. The grid is checkered with two colors, usually white and black, the bottom right hand corner being white. The players sit opposite of each other and have sixteen chess pieces that they use to attempt to win the game.1 The objective of the game is to use your sixteen chess pieces to checkmate the king?that is, having the king in a situation where he is unable to move without being in threat of being captured by an opponent?s piece. Each chess piece has certain chess rules which governs the way each chess piece may move. One of the pieces is called the Queen. The Queen is ultimate piece of the chess board being able to move in any direction and for any number of squares.2 How many ways can eight queens be placed on a chess board so that no other queen will attack another?3 A queen can attack any other queen along the eight paths which extend from queen. These paths are vertically, horizontally, and diagonally.4 Development Some observations must be made before attempting to solve this problem. Since there is a 8 by 8 chess board and 8 queens, then there must be a queen on each row. Also, a chess board has four black, and four white squares in each row. That would mean that half of the queens must be placed on black squares and half of the queens must be placed on the white squares.5 Each chess square will be labeled in the method shown in figure 1. The Benefits of Recycling Plastics One good reason to recycle plastic is that there is just so much of it. Plastics are used to manufacture an incredible number of products we use every day, such as beverage and food containers, trash bags and grocery bags, cups and utensils, childrens toys and diapers, and bottles for everything from mouthwash and shampoo to glass cleaner and dishwashing liquid. And thats not even counting all the plastic that goes into furniture, appliances, computers,  and automobiles. The Need Is Growing As the use of plastics has increased over the years, they have become a larger part of our nations municipal solid waste (MSW)- growing from less than 1 percent in 1960 to more than 13 percent in 2013, according to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency. As an example of how and why plastic waste is increasing, the International Bottled Water Association reports that the  U.S.  consumed 9.67 billion gallons of bottled water in 2012, compared to 9.1 billion gallons the year before. The United States is the worlds leading consumer of bottled water. A good first step in reducing waste is switching to a reusable water bottle. Natural Resources and Energy Conservation Recycling plastics reduces the amount of energy and resources (such as water, petroleum, natural gas, and coal) needed to create plastic. According to a 2009 study by researchers Peter Gleick and Heather Cooley  from the Pacific Institute of California, a pint-sized bottle of water requires about 2,000 times as much energy to produce as the same amount of tap water. Recycling Plastics Saves Landfill Space Recycling plastic products also keeps them out of landfills and allows the plastics to be reused in manufacturing new products. Recycling 1 ton of plastic saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space. And lets face it, a lot of plastic ends up directly in the environment, breaking down into tiny pieces, polluting our soil and water, and contributing to the oceans Great Garbage Patches. Its Relatively Easy Recycling plastics has never been easier. Today, 80 percent of Americans have easy access to a plastics recycling program, whether they participate in a municipal curbside program or live near a drop-off site. A universal numbering system for plastic types makes it even easier. According to the American Plastics Council, more than 1,800 U.S. businesses handle or reclaim postconsumer plastics. In addition, many grocery stores now serve as recycling collection sites for plastic bags and plastic wrap. Room for Improvement Overall, the level of plastics recycling is still relatively low. In 2012, only 6.7 percent of plastics in the municipal solid waste stream were recycled, according to the EPA. Alternatives to Plastic While recycling is important, one of the best ways to reduce the amount of plastic in our nations MSW is to find alternatives. For example, reusable grocery bags have seen a growth in popularity in recent years, and they are a great way to limit the amount of plastic that needs to be generated in the first place.

According to other people the level of specialization brought about by division of labor was externally determined but in the contrary, Smith argued that it was the dynamic engine towards economic progress. Surprisingly, Smith himself criticizes the division of labor arguing that it leads to mental mutilation of the workers hence rendering them ignorant and insular because their lives are limited only to doing a single task many times. These ideas by Smith are incorporated into today’s discussions on economic issues. Human capital is one of the discussions in which Adams Smiths ideas are used. Human capital is one of the four types of capital that were identified by Adam as being important for the success of a company. As argued by Smith previously, human capital and the productive ability of the labor force is both dependant on the division of labor. It’s worthy noting that human capital includes skills, dexterity, and the ability to make the right decisions and human capital can be acquired through informal schooling and on the so called on-the-job training. These acquisitions of skills aimed at improving the effectiveness of the workforce are still practiced today by ma ny companies. (An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776) productivity) Adam Smith vs Karl Marx Both Adam Smith and Karl Marx shared a common idea and this common idea was their praise for capitalism .These two early pioneers of modern economics agreed that capitalism was the key in unleashing the productive powers. This argument stated that for the employees to be more productive, they needed to be subject to their bosses or seniors. If the employees were left to work at their own leisure these two men agreed that their productivity would be minimal and as a result, their employers would incur big losses. This created the need for competition among both the employers and the employees as well since this would keep these two parties on their feet through out. But despite these similarities in their in their views, there was differences in their ideas as well. Marx and Smith both seem to agree that capitalism is the ultimate driving force in profit maximization .New profits and value added, they seem to agree came as result of the employers paying the workers the exact value that is in the market for their labor capacity. But the sad thing was that in most cases, the market value of the goods which the workers produced exceeded that market value. This clearly means that the employers were making maximum profits while paying little to their workers. Both Marx and Smith agree that     there are different types of capital and they play different roles during production. Production Capitals include things like land, natural resources or raw materials and lastly technology. All the above named different classes of capital were dependant on each other in production. These two men seemed to agree also that social relations of production should not only be made up of relationships between individuals but rather should be between large groups of people or certain classes of people. These two men had the same idea of a free market. They described a free market as a market in which all prices of the goods that are on offer are decided by mutual consent between sellers and buyers   and also one   that did not mislead both the sellers as well as the buyers. They both argued that these two major people in the market, the buyer and the seller, should not be forced into making decision by an external party. The relationship between these two players should not be manipulated by any one but to the contrary, it should be left to obey the natural law of supply and demand. The difference between free and controlled markets is that   controlled markets are controlled by external forces These forces mostly refers to governments which may directly or indirectly try to have control of prices or the supplies in the market. One area where these two men seem to differ is their idea of job specialization. Smith advocates for specialization for jobs among workers. He argues that laborers who were assigned too many different duties were less productive than those who were assigned a specific task to perform day in day out. He says that this leads to efficient usage of time and it seeks to save time that is usually wasted by workers when moving from one task to another. But to the contrary, Karl Marx disapproves this idea arguing that job specialization could result to workers with more poor overall skills. This, as he says would be brought about by tendency of people to resist change. He also says that when people perform one task repeatedly, it may lead to boredom and make them less enthusiastic about their work. He describes this whole process as a kind of alienation. According to him, the more workers become specialized and do the same thing over and over, they later become totally alienated. Marx goes ahead to argue that division of labor brings with it spiritual depression to the workers. This means that the workers perform their duties feeling as if they are being forced other than doing out of their own will .This greatly lowers the morale of the workers and as a result lower their productivity. Physical tiredness or fatigue can be brought about by job specialization as Marx goes ahead to argue since they no longer feel like human beings but they feel more of machines. Contrary to the idea of Smith, Marx believes that fullness of production is very essential to human liberation goes on to say that he would accept the idea of a strict division of labor as a temporary necessary evil. These views can be said to be in total contrast to those expressed by Smith. Smith on his part believed that any business was a collection of inter related tasks that were aimed at solving a particular issue. So as to effectively do this, Smith argued that the workload should be divided into simple sets of tasks which could be done effectively by workers who were equipped with special skills for doing that particular job. It’s worthy noting that Smith, despite his advocating for division of labor, he does not advocate for achievement of labor division at all costs. It’s worthy noting that in contrast to Smith’s view which were only limited to functional domain only and were made up of activities that were direct in sequence as far as the manufacturing process is concerned, modern processes are very inclusive. It was as a result of his ideas that labor division was adopted. Today, we can clearly say that much of today’s practices in the job markets have bor rowed greatly from the ideas of Smith. In all organization, there is job specialization. This has led to the rise of departments in many organizations and each department is allocated certain workers who are in most cases equipped with certain skill to enable them perform specific duties .The sense in this whole exercise as argued by Smith is that it saves a great deal of time that could be wasted by employees when moving from one task to another. This proves very essential since no employer will want to waste his money employees without maximizing their productivity. However, it is good to note that Smith admits that seeking self interests is not always good. All he tried to do was trying to reverse believe that self interest is generally bad. He also intended to bring to the light the idea that wile human motives are selfish and greedy; the out come of these human behaviors would bring benefits to the whole community at large. This is the direct opposite of the ideas that Marx had .In his arguments; Marx says that the major struggles are always between the producers and those who work in the industries. Another of his greatest contribution to modern economics was his sharp distinction between the two types of division namely social and economic division of labor .If these two labor divisions are conflated, it might look as if labor division is inevitable rather than being constructed socially and influenced by power. Bilayer Organic Solar Cell in MATLAB Chapter 3 Modelling and Simulation 3.1 Introduction This thesis is based on simulation of design characteristic of bilayer organic solar cell in MATLAB so it is very essential to be familiar with modelling and simulation. This chapter explains about modelling and simulation, characteristics of simulation, mathematical modelling (analytical and numerical both) and its properties, electrical modelling, work done in the field of modelling and simulation of OSC and finally small introduction of MATLAB which shows it’s features because of which this simulation work is in MATLAB. 3.2 Modelling and Simulation Modelling and simulation [1-4] is obtaining related data about how something will act without really trying it in real life. MS is using models either statically or over time, to build up data as a basis for making technical decisions. The terms modelling and simulation are often used interchangeably. Simulation skill is the tool set of engineers of each and every application domains and included in the knowledge body of engineering management. Modelling and simulation is a regulation on its own. With the addition of dynamic factor, simulation systems develop their functionality and allow to calculate predictions, estimates, optimization and what-if analyses. The meaningful abstraction of reality, follow-on in the proper necessity of a conceptualization and fundamental assumptions and constraints, is known as modelling. Simulation is execution of a model over time. Conceptualization is targeted by modelling, means modelling belongs to abstraction level and implementation is targeted by simulation, means simulation belongs to implementation level. Conceptualization (modelling) and implementation (simulation)– are the two activities that are jointly dependent, but can nevertheless be conducted by separate individuals. Modelling and simulation has helped to reduce expenses, enhance the feature of products and systems, and document. 3.2.1 Features of Simulation Interest in simulation applications are increasing gradually because of the following reasons- Use of simulation is cheaper and safer as compared to conduction of experiment. As compared to the conventional experiments, simulations can be more realistic because it permits free formation of surroundings parameters that are obtained in the active application area of the final product. As compared to real time, execution of simulation is faster because of this quality it can be used in if-then-else analysis of unlike alternatives, in particular when the essential information to initialize the simulation can simply be founded from functioning data. Tool box of conventional decision support system is being added a decision support simulation system with the use of simulation. Set up of a coherent synthetic environment is permitted by simulation which allows addition of simulated systems in the premature analysis phase through mixed virtual systems with virtual check surrounding to first prototypical elements for concluded system. If managed perfectly, the surrounding can be migrated from the growth and test domain to the domain of training and learning in resulting life cycle phases for the systems. 3.2.2 Steps for Modelling For modelling four basic steps are as follows †¢ Step 1: Monitor – In the first step conceptual model of ground profile and job objectives are developed. †¢ Step 2: Measure – In the second step theoretical model is developed which is used to explain the main processes running in the problem. †¢ Step 3: Describe – In the third step mathematical explanation of these processes are developed and to get a perfect solution verification is also done. †¢ Step 4: Verify – In the fourth step under the light of experimental physical reality, results of mathematical expression is interpretated. Confirm the suggestion, get additional measurements, enhance the complexity or precision of the mathematical result, or modify your conceptual understanding until you have complete understanding of the physical actuality. 3.3 Mathematical Modelling Fig 3.1, shows the simplest explanation of modelling – the method through which we can take out a complex physical actuality from a suitable mathematical reality on which designing of system is based. Development of suitable mathematical expression is done in numerical modelling. Mathematical modelling is a group of mathematical expressions that show the variation of a system from one state to another state (differential equations) and dependence of one variable to the other variable (state equations). The use of mathematical words to describe the performance of a system is mathematical modelling. Performance of photovoltaic system [5-7] is also illustrated by mathematical modelling. Number of different parameters (like – series and shunt resistance, ideality factor, reverse saturation current, open circuit voltage, short circuit current, fill factor, photo-generated current, efficiency) of photovoltaic system can be calculated by mathematical modelling. Fig. 3.1: Simple definition of modelling. 3.3.1 Properties of Mathematical Modelling We prefer mathematical modelling because of the following reasons With the help of mathematical model we can understand and investigate the meaning of equations and useful relations. It becomes very simple to make a educational environment in which preliminary person can be interactively occupied in guided inquiry and hands on actions with the help of mathematical modelling software (like – Stella II, Excel, online JAVA, MATLAB). Mathematical model is build up after the development of conceptual model of physical system. It is used to calculate approximately the quantitative presentation of the system. In order to spot a model’s strengths and weaknesses, quantitative outcomes obtained from mathematical modelling can be compared with observational information. The most important element of the resultant â€Å"complete model† of a system is mathematical model. Complete model is an assembly of theoretical, physical, numerical, visualization and statistical sub-models. 3.4 Types of Mathematical Modelling These can also be divided into either numerical models and analytical models. 3.4.1 Numerical Modelling – It is one of the type of mathematical modelling in which numerical time stepping method is used to obtain model response over time. Results are presented in the form of graph or table. In this thesis numerical modelling is used to analysis the design characteristic of Bilayer Organics Solar Cell. 3.4.2 Analytical Modelling – Modelling having a closed form results is called analytical modelling. In closed form results, mathematical analytic functions are used to present the response to the equations that describe variation in a system. 3.5 Electrical Modelling In this section, the electrical model for bilayer organic solar cell is described. One of the important characteristics of organic materials is their extremely small mobility, which makes modelling of their electrical properties difficult. Another problem in the electrical modelling of organic thin film devices (e. g. planar organic solar cells) was the lack of unique and precise electrical parameters for very thin layers of materials and occasionally lack of any information. Here with the aid of a self consistent loop between the Poisson equation and continuity equations for electrons and holes, the I-V curve of the device is calculated. It is assumed that the electrical current is due to the drift-diffusion transport of carrier. Consequently, in order to model the drift diffusion equations, a self consistent loop between the solutions of Poissons equation and two separate continuity equations for electrons and holes is needed. The design of the loop should be in a way such that the solution of each equation can be used as the initial conditions for the others, to generate a self correcting mechanism. The model that is used is based on the following assumptions: The generated excitons are separated right after absorption and the numbers of the generated electron-hole pairs are directly imported into the continuity equations as the generation rate . The transport properties of the organic materials can be totally modelled by mobility, DOS, bimolecular recombination term and doping levels. The connections between different layers follow the physical rules of hetero-junction connections between conventional semiconductors interfaces. The other two equations, which are solved in a closed loop with the mentioned Poisson equation, are two separate continuity equations one for the electrons and one for the holes. The flowchart of the electrical model using the mentioned equations is shown in Fig. 3.2. Fig. 3.2 : Flowchart of electrical model. 3.6 Work Done in Modelling and Simulation of OSC Pettersson et al (1999)[8] have reported a model based on the experimental short circuit light generated current action spectrum of poly(3-(4’-(1†,4†,7†-trioxaoctyl)phenyl)thiophene) (PEOPT)/C60 fullerene hetero-junction photovoltaic devices. This modelling was completely based on the assumption that generation process of photocurrent is the result of creation, diffusion and dissociation of excitons. Using complex refractive indices and layer thickness, internal optical electric field was computed. We got values for exciton diffusion length of 4.7 and 7.7 nm for PEOPT C60 respectively. Computed photocurrent and electric field distribution were used to study the effect of geometrical architecture with respect to the efficiency of device. Cheknane et al (2007)[9] has reported a photovoltaic cell in which photo-active layer of MDMO-PPV and PCBM material is sandwiched between ITO and Al electrodes, there is an additional interfacial layer of PEDOT/PSS on the top of ITO. Comparision between V-I characteristics of device with and without extra interfacial layer is done and modelled by electrical equivalent circuit. Simulation results show that V-I characteristics of bulk hetero-junction solar cell is affected by extra interfacial layer of PEDOT/PSS. Hwang et al (2007)[10] has reported drift-diffusion time dependent model of OSC based on blends of P3HT and red polyfluorene copolymer. In this model electron trapping and field dependent charge separation is used to investigate the device physics. This model is used to reproduce practical light-generated current transients observed in response to variable intensity step function excited light. Vervisch et al (2011)[11] has reported OSCs simulation using finite element method. Using finite difference time domain process, optical modelling is done and electrical characteristics is obtained by solving Poisson’s and continuity equations. Simulation results show the effect of physical parameters like exciton lifetime on OSC performance. Casalegno et al (2013)[12] has reported numerical approaches that give valuable information of microscopic processes underlying generation of photo-current in OSC. Here 3D master equation approach is used in which equations explaining particle dynamics rely on mean field guess and result is obtained numerically. Reliability of this method is tested against Kinetic Monte Carlo simulation method. V-I curve shows that the result of this method is very close to the exact result. Because of the adoption of mean field approximation for electrostatic interactions, we get biggest deviation in current densities. Strong energy disorder can also affect response quality. Simulation results show that master equation approach is faster than Kinetic Monte Carlo approach. Foster et al (2013)[13] presented a drift-diffusion model to obtain V-I curves and equivalent circuit parameters of bilayer organic solar cell. Minority carrier densities are neglected and final equations are solved with internal boundary condition on material interface and ohmic boundary condition on contacts. From the solution of this model V-I curves are calculated. 3.7 Introduction to MATLAB MATLAB [13] is a high performance language for technical computing. It integrates calculation, visualization and programming in a simple to use surroundings where troubles and solutions are presented in well-known mathematical notation. MATLAB can solve technical computing troubles faster than conventional programming language (like – Forton, C, C++). Typical uses include – Financial modeling and investigation Computational biology Math and computation algorithm development Data acquisition modeling Simulation and prototyping data study Exploration and visualization Graphics application development for scientific and engineering field Graphical user interface building Matrix laboratory is the full form of MATLAB. Basic data element in MATLAB is an array which does not need dimensioning. With the help of MATLAB number of technical computing troubles mainly those with vector and matrix formulations can be solved in a fraction of time. Basically it was written to give simple access to matrix software. For advance science, mathematics, engineering field and high productivity industrial research, progress and study MATLAB is very important instruction tool. Comprehensive collection of MATLAB functions are toolbox. Toolboxes of MATLAB permit us to study and apply specific technology. Toolboxes are available in different areas like – neural network, communication, signal processing, fuzzy logic, simulation, control system and many others. Differential equations are solved very easily in MATLAB [14-17]. We can also do modeling and simulation of solar cell using MATLAB [18,19]. 3.8 Conclusions This chapter explains about modelling and simulation. Presentation of physical configuration or activities of device by conceptual mathematical model that approximates this behavior, is called modeling. Model may either be closed form equation or arrangement of simultaneous equations that are numerically solved. Analytical and numerical both type of analysis can be used in modeling. Simulation is process of imitating the physical system behavior by considering the characteristic of an analogous but different system without resorting direct practical experimentation. For simulation we are using MATLAB which is a high performance technical computing language. We get that MATLAB integrates calculation, programming and visualization in a simple to use surroundings where mathematical expressions are used to express troubles and solutions. Because of all these qualities of MATLAB a system of number of numerical equations used for electrical modelling of bilayer organic solar cell are solved easily and in better way as compared to other programming languages. 3.9 References [1] B. Centuries apart Robert Herrick and Robert Frost wrote poems illustrating the brevity of life. “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time'; by Herrick and “Nothing Gold Can Stay'; by Frost are the two poems which address the limited time humanity, especially the time of youth, has to spend in this life. Both authors use nature to symbolize the shortness of life and the time spent in youth.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  A symbol of nature utilized in both poems is a flower. In full bloom, a flower is in its most beautiful and prolific state. In youth, man is in the same state of a flower in bloom, resplendent and bountiful, but the time of beauty for a flower and youth is short. Herrrick states in lines 3-4 “And this same flower that smiles today,/ Tommorrow will be dying,';(728) which is a symbol of the shortness of youth. Frost in lines 3-4 “Her early leaf’s a flower;/ But only so an hour,';(989) also symbolizes the fleeting time of youth. In the beginning, a flower and youth are filled with vitality, but in a short amount of time the flower will wilt and die, and the youth will be an adult on a passage to death.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The second symbol used by Herrick and Frost is the day: youth is dawn, adulthood is midday, and death is the setting of the sun. From the day man is born, he is dying. In the second stanza, Herrick illustrates the shortness of a day; the higher in the sky the sun gets, the closer to setting it gets. In line 7, “So dawn goes down to day,'; (990) Frost also addresses the limited time man has in life. Frost’s choice of the word down to describe the action of the sun helps to make the symbol of the day more clear, by illustrating the shortness of a day. Usually one thinks of the sun rising in the day not going down until after noon.

Georges Bizet   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Georges Bizet was born in Paris on October 25th, 1838. He was trained by his parents, who were musical, and admitted to the Paris Conservatoire just before his tenth birthday. There he studied counterpoint with Zimmerman and Gounod and composition with Halà ©vy, and under Marmontel's tuition he became a brilliant pianist. Bizet's exceptional powers as a composer are already apparent in the products of his Conservatoire years, notably the Symphony in C, a work of precocious genius dating from 1855 (but not performed until 1935). In 1857 Bizet shared with Lecocq a prize offered by Offenbach for a setting of the one-act operetta Le Docteur Miracle; later that year he set out for Italy as holder of the coveted Prix de Rome.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  During his three years in Rome Bizet began or projected many compositions; only four survive, including the opera buffa, Don Procopio (not performed until 1906). Shortly after his return to Paris, in September 1861, his mother died; the composer consoled himself with his parents' maid, by whom he had a son in June 1862. He rejected teaching at the Conservatoire and the temptation to become a concert pianist, and completed his obligations under the terms of the Prix de Rome. The last of these, a one-act opà ©ra comique, La guzla de l'emir, was rehearsed at the Opà ©ra-Comique in 1863 but withdrawn when the Thà ©Ãƒ ¢tre-Lyrique director, who had been offered 100 000 francs to produce annually an opera by a Prix de Rome winner who had not had a work staged, invited Bizet to compose Les pà ªcheurs de perles.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Bizet completed it in four months. It was produced in September 1863, but met with a generally cool reception: an uneven work, with stiff characterization, it is notable for the skilful scoring of its exotic numbers. In the ensuing years Bizet earned a living arranging other composers' music and giving piano lessons. Not until December 1867 was another opera staged - La jolie fille de Perth, which shows a surer dramatic mastery than Les pà ªcheurs despite an inept libretto. It received a good press but had only 18 performances.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  1868 was a year of crisis for Bizet, with more abortive works, attacks of quinsy and a reexamination of his religious stance; and his attitude to music grew deeper. In June 1869 he married Genevià ¨ve, daughter of his former teacher, Halà ©vy, and the next year they suffered the privations caused by the Franco-Prussian war (Bizet enlisted in the National Guard).

“Pygmalion” explores Bernard Shaw’s idea

â€Å"Pygmalion† explores Bernard Shaw's idea that people should not be limited by the social class into which they were born; that they should have a chance to improve themselves by gaining an education. This is called the â€Å"nature versus nurture† debate, which marked a major change in Victorian England. Should we remain in the position we were born into (nature), as was the basic Victorian belief, or can we change our status; establish equality between people regardless of age, gender and race (nurture)? Education is the foundation of these aims and is presented in the play as a way of self-improvement through teaching and training, whether it is academically or socially based. The characters around Eliza treat her with contempt. When Eliza convinces Mrs Eynsford Hill to buy flowers from her, her daughter, Clara says to her mother â€Å"Make her give you the change. These things are only a penny a bunch†¦ Sixpence thrown away! (She retreats in disgust). † This shows the upper classes view those beneath them as worthless-the money is not spent or given but is â€Å"thrown away† as if it has been put in the dustbin. Clara does not address Eliza, but talks as if she is not there, showing that Clara wants to distance herself from Eliza. This indicates that the majority of the upper classes believed in â€Å"nature†; everyone had a set place in society that could not be changed. It also shows that Clara is not as well educated as she would like to think; she does not believe in self-improvement, and so does not understand the concept of education. Eliza however, believed in bettering her situation in life. â€Å"I want to be a lady in a flower shop ‘stead of sellin' at the corner†, proving that she was an ambitious character, and believed in fulfilling her potential. This demonstrates that Eliza believes in the â€Å"nurture† side of the argument, and even though she has not received an outstanding amount of education, she is willing to be educated in order to change herself as a person. She is also ashamed of her current status. When she takes a taxi to her home, she tells the taxi-driver to go to â€Å"Bucknam Pellis†. When the driver questions her, she replies â€Å"Of course I havnt none (any business there). But I wasn't going to let him know that. You drive me home†¦ Angel Court, Drury Lane, next Meiklejohn's oil shop. This reflects her proud personality-she doesn't want to look â€Å"lower class† in front of Freddie. It also highlights her situation in life as it contrasts her poverty to the richness of the royal family. It shows her lack of knowledge of social matters because she does not know anywhere else that is an affluent area, and so is unconvincing at being â€Å"upper class†. However, by the end of the play, she manages to make everyone believe that she is a duchess, which proves that she has learned a great deal socially. We immediately assume that Higgins is rude, as a result of one of the first things he says. Oh, shut up, shut up. Do I look like a policeman? † This is supposed to reassure Eliza, but with his sarcasm and abrupt language, he does little to console her, implying that he has poor social skills. If he choose to improve these it would make him a better person; he would become more compassionate towards others. Higgins boasts about his talent for improving men's statuses, when they have moved up the social ladder. â€Å"Men begin in Kentish town with i80 a year, and end up in Park lane with 100 thousand. They want to drop Kentish Town, but give themselves away every time they open their mouths. Now I can teach them†¦ I can place any man within two miles of London. Sometimes within two streets. † This shows that Higgins is a learned man. It also proves that there are different types of education; there is a contrast between Higgins' knowledge and Eliza's. Higgins first sees Eliza as â€Å"so deliciously low, so horribly dirty†¦ I shall make a duchess of this draggletailed guttersnipe. † He sees her as a challenge, and focuses on her appearance. He calls her names because â€Å"the girl doesn't belong to anybody-is no use to anybody but me. Higgins regards her as an object without an owner, which again highlights his lack of inter-personal skills. Higgins' lack of social education is contrasted against that of the Colonel. Pickering asks, â€Å"Does it occur to you, Higgins, that the girl has some feelings? † To which Higgins replies â€Å"Oh no, I don't think so. Not any feelings that we need bother about. † This indicates Higgins's complete lack of respect towards Eliza, and that he only sees her as an experiment, not as a human being. He regards well-educated people as his equal, so by teaching Eliza, he is able to change his opinion of her. Again, this reflects the â€Å"nurture† side of the â€Å"nature versus nurture† debate; by educating people, we can overcome our prejudices and promote equality. Eliza's first reaction towards Higgins is totally the opposite of Higgins's reaction. She acts â€Å"(quite overwhelmed, looking up at him in mingled wonder and deprecation without daring to raise her head. )† This is partly because of his talent at placing accents, and also due to the respect she has for his standing in society. The difference in their reactions reflects Higgins and Eliza's characters. We can see that as Eliza's social skills are more acceptable, (even though her academic and social standing is below Higgins) she draws a more favourable conclusion. It shows that she has a better social awareness than Higgins, so she is able to educate him, which again, encourages equality. The first learning point for Eliza occurred at Higgins's house, where she learned elements of social ritual. Firstly, Mrs. Pearce shows her the bathroom, where Eliza has to get accustomed to the differences in standards of hygiene of the higher classes. She is not used to having a bath. â€Å"You expect me to wet myself all over? † she exclaims, when Mrs. Pearce shows her the bathroom. â€Å"It's not natural: it would kill me. I've never had a bath in my life† This demonstrates how dirty she is, and how unaccustomed Eliza is with soap and water; hygiene is a major aspect that Eliza learns while staying at Higgins's house. However, her attitude dramatically changes, and she even says, â€Å"washing is a treat†, showing how rapidly education can change ones opinions. Mrs Pearce is shocked by Eliza's nightly habits; â€Å"do you mean to say that you sleep in the underclothes you wear in the daytime? † This again highlights the difference between the classes. Higgins' fine furnishings contrast starkly with her cramped living conditions on Drury Lane. â€Å"I couldn't sleep here,† Eliza tells him. â€Å"It's too good for the likes of me. † She is still used to being regarded as below everyone else, and having inadequate living standards. By being taught the social rituals of a different class in society, Eliza can become an equal to Higgins and Pickering. By having Eliza in the house, Higgins also learns to control his behaviour. Mrs Pearce asks him â€Å"not to come down to breakfast in his dressing gown or use it as a napkin† because this is unacceptable, and he is supposed to be setting an example to Eliza. This shows that no matter what their social standing, everyone can improve their education, even though it may be arduous. When Eliza has her first speaking lesson, she realises that it is not going to be as easy as she originally thought â€Å"I can't hear no difference cep that it sounds more genteel-like when you say it† she moans. However, the knowledge that she has already gained from Higgins encourages her to continue because she can see that education will improve her life and the way she lives it. By changing Eliza's appearance, Higgins and Pickering begin to make her acceptable in higher-class society. â€Å"(Eliza, who is exquisitely dressed, produces an impression of such remarkable distinction and beauty as she enters that they all rise)†. Even though she looks presentable, Eliza is unaccustomed to the etiquette and behaviour of the upper classes, as Higgins tells her â€Å"†¦ to keep to two subjects of conversation†. This is because she is unreserved in her speech. When she attends Mrs. Higgins's â€Å"at-home day† she talks about her drunken father and swears, both of which is inappropriate behaviour. She talks of the death of her aunt, â€Å"What become of her new straw hat that should have come to me? Somebody pinched it; and what I say is, them as pinched it done her in†. Here, her grammar is poor and she uses slang. This is unacceptable to the company she is with. Higgins learns that this is the key area he needs to work on, as she gives â€Å"herself away with every sentence she utters†. It proves that education goes deeper than appearances; Eliza has to change from the inside. Eliza did change internally when she had to learn new skills. Without them, the material possessions such as jewellery and clothes would have been futile. She learns to speak more eloquently, she first spoke with a Cockney accent, and ended up having the hostess at an Embassy in London say that â€Å"she speaks English perfectly†. In fact, they say that she is not English, â€Å"Only foreigners, who have been taught to speak it, speak it so well†. This concludes that is possible to alter one's social standing through education, and that both social and academic knowledge is compulsory to make this transition. The transformation of Eliza affects her whole outlook on life. Eliza does not really realise it until the end of the character shift, when she is unsure of where she is headed. â€Å"Oh! If only I could go back to my flower basket! Why did you take my independence away from me? † Higgins tells her â€Å"Why, six months ago you would have thought it the millennium to have a flower shop of your own†. However, now that she is more aware of the world, she becomes more ambitious. Her education has allowed her to see herself and analyse her life † I'll advertise it in the papers that your duchess is only a flower girl that you taught, and that she'll teach anybody to be duchess just the same in six months for a thousand guineas†. This demonstrates her confidence and also her increased academic knowledge; she feels able to teach people. Even Higgins notices the change within her. â€Å"You were like a millstone around my neck. Now you're a tower of strength. † He is proud of her achievements. This is a radical change from the beginning of the play, when he was constantly insulting her. He even admits that he has â€Å"learnt something from (her) idiotic notions: I confess that humbly and gratefully†, showing that he has become more open minded to other people's ideas. The characters have changed on the outside and from within. It is only by having a greater awareness of the world that Eliza could say â€Å"†¦ When a child is brought to a foreign country, it picks up the language†¦ and forgets its own. Well, I am a child in your country. I have forgotten my own language and can speak nothing but yours. This shows her knowledge of culture and behaviour, as well as using appropriate language and a total change on her part, which she benefits from. She has undergone a dramatic self-improvement. Higgins has not changed so radically, but has learned â€Å"the great secret. (It) is not having bad manners or good manners or having any other particular kind of manners, but having the same kind of manner for all human souls. † He has finally learned to treat Eliza as an equal, which is a valuable lesson learnt from her. Both Higgins and Eliza have been nurtured, to become better people, by having a greater academic and social understanding.

Bpo Attrition- the Problem and Its Solution Essay

Human Resources In Indian Business Process Outsourcing Organizations- Attrition. Is there any solution? Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is likely to be the next big thing for services in this decade. The industry is very diverse, with several sub-segments, each displaying its own unique characteristics. The BPO players need to be excellent in every facet of operations as the market is highly competitive at every level and re-defining itself every day. Being a People-Centric industry what are the people issues that, the HR will have to handle? What are the challenges faced by HR in dealing with them? HI Before this, one needs to gain an understanding about BPO’s and what businesses are Indian companies doing in this segment? BPO is based on the premise that whatever competencies are not very important for an organization   (not their core competencies); outsource or ask somebody else who is adept at doing it, to do it for the organization. In this way the organization can concentrate on its core competencies and not worry about on trivial issues, which are not strategic in nature. But these days we even find organizations outsourcing their core competencies or the core business aspects to BPO’s to gain the advantage of cost cutting and quality issues. Typically, BPO would include call centers, problem solving in insurance sector to other sophisticated activities like research and other back office dealings. India has the advantage of low cost, highly qualified English speaking labour, thus most of the BPO ventures in India are call centers, although of late, companies are entering into high-end areas like research. But for sometime at least we can assume that most of the companies would be doing the call center kind of business. Most of these kinds of jobs get done in the night in India to account for the 12-hour time lag between US and India. Over a period of time the biological rhythm of the employee changes, causing various kind of disorders like indigestion, fatigue, headaches etc. so the health of the employee is a major concern for the HR, more so because most of them are graduates in their early twenties. In addition the jobs are monotonous, often nerve wracking. So it is a challenge for HR to adequately rotate the jobs of employees and provide them with enough time to refresh, so that they are able to deliver service of highest quality. Although many companies are targeting fresh graduates, they are not able to retain them. Attrition continues to be high 35%. HR has to ensure that a proper career path is chalked out so that graduates increasingly see this area as a potential career for them. Clients in US, UK and other European Countries are very quality conscious and as increasingly complex jobs get outsourced, it becomes important that HR ensures right quality people are selected and the right quality of training is provided to them. This ensures that later they do not face embarrassing time from their clients. There has been enormous requirement in this sector for manpower and huge salaries are up for taking. The times are good for this industry, but one has to keep in mind that this industry is still in its way to figure out in the growth stage. One cannot predict the future so easily and the sour experience of software companies is still fresh in minds. So a little bit of caution is to be exercised in this matter and proper trends have to be forecast by the HR to ensure that they do not go the software way when ultimately the industry stabilizes. Attrition †¦ A major problem rocking the Industry. Some Facts to Ponder about†¦ * 95% companies in the industry have Attrition problems * The small-sized and medium-sized companies loose more people * Turnover rates are as high as 30% in some reputed BPO’s and over all around 35% in the Industry. Employees move to smaller companies for exciting opportunities and greater identity and move to large companies for defined roles, clearer career paths and better HR systems. Loyalty towards their employer or towards the organization has slowly seems to have disappeared. Executives know that fast-moving markets require fast-moving organizations that are continually refresh ed with new talent, and they have become quite adept to outside hiring. Even companies are quite comfortable with bringing in talent; they remain distinctly uncomfortable about seeing talent leave. The competition to headhunt employees with good performance ratings of other organizations is an open ploy. The mediators (so called Consultants) make this job easy for the organizations by gaining the data bases of employees and they lure the employees by offering huge pay packages finally making them to move from their job. One of the biggest assets of the BPO Industry is manpower. So, the biggest challenge in this industry is to attract and retain knowledgeable manpower. Today, BPO companies are facing a shortage of knowledge workers because the rate at which they lose employees is almost ouble the rate at which they hire. A major proportion of the turnover issue is attributed to the movement of manpower to the Companies who lure them by offering either better pay or higher designation. The average stay of an employee in bpo companies has dropped to one year. In such a scenario where companies are fighting to combat global business competition, and struggling to survive, employee turnover comes as a double blow. And the issue of managing employee separation often gets ignored. Just because a business is dependent on Communication skills, for instance, doesn’t mean that it has to go to great lengths to retain its employees. If there’s a large pool of people with good communication skills available, it might want to focus on recruitment rather than retention. Moreover, since new hires have lower salaries than long-term employees, the company is able to keep a lid on compensation levels. Cooperating with competitors is another way of dealing with retention. Because of the intensity of talent-war, companies instinctively view retention and recruitment as competitive exercises. But history shows that cooperation, even among competitors, can be one of the most effective ways of dealing with talent shortages. A New concept called Anti Poaching agreement between BPO organizations is on the Move. According to this agreement, the parties getting in to the agreement will share their employee databases with each other and so will restrain employees to shift in to each other companies. Lets hope that this works good for the BPO’s. Frequent job-hopping of employees is not good for any one, neither for the company nor for the employee in terms of Growth.

Perception of Organized Crime Essay

Organized crime has been defined as illegal acts committed by a criminal organization or group. The NCIS (2005) described organized crime as having 4 salient attributes: (1) organized crime group contains at least three people; (2) the criminal activity the group engages in is ongoing and indefinite in duration; (3) the group is motivated by a desire for profit or power; and, (4) the group commits serious criminal offenses (Lynman & Potter, 2007). There are different categories of organized criminal behavior. They include the provision of illicit services, provision of illicit goods, conspiracy to commit crime, penetration of legitimate business, extortion, and corruption. Illicit services are services that legitimate business do not provide. These services include but are not limited to gambling that is illegal, protection rackets, loan sharking, and prostitution. Illicit goods are also not available not available from legitimate businesses. Illegal drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin are examples of illicit goods. Unregistered guns and stolen property are also examples of illicit goods. Conspiracy is an agreement between two or more people to violate the law. Conspiracy is a vital category of organized criminal behavior. Organized crime members often work together for the purpose of making money. They work together to sell drugs, stolen property, loan sharking, gambling, prostitution and other illegal activities they have going on within their organization. Organized crime organizations have no legal way to spend their profits so they must hide their revenue. They do this by penetrating legal businesses. Many of these crime organizations have businesses such as construction and contractors. Extortion is another category of organized crime. Many organized crime organizations use extortion to infiltrate legitimate businesses. Extortion is the use or threatened use of violence or force to achieve a criminal end (Lynman & Potter, 2007). Corruption is also a category of organized crime. Many of these organized crime groups could not  flourish if it wasn’t for for the aid of pubic and private figures such as police officers, judges, prosecutors, mayors, bankers, attorneys, and elected and appointed officials. Organized crime groups have different hierarchies. There is the standard hierarchy in which there is a single organized crime group which is led by a single powerful individual. These organizations have clearly defined roles, a readily identified chain of command, and a hierarchy that is designed to provide a strong system of internal discipline. Then there is the regional hierarchy. These hierarchies are tightly controlled groups with strong systems of internal discipline and clearly defined roles and lines of authority. Next there’s the clustered hierarchy. This is an organized crime group that involves a number of smaller organized crime groups that coordinate their activities and enterprises. There is also a core group. This is an unstructured group of organized criminal surrounded by a larger network of individuals engaged in serious criminal activity. Finally, there’s the criminal network. Criminal networks are loosely organized, highly adaptable, very fluid of networks of individual participants who organize themselves around ongoing criminal enterprise (Lynman & Potter, 2007). The perception I had of organized crime is different from what I read in week one. Before this week, I always associated the Mob or the Mafia with organized crime. I think this comes from the movies and television shows that I have watched. I described organized crime as a group of people working for a â€Å"boss† to break the law. I thought that there was one head and people reported to him. I did not know that there were different categories of organized crime. I always associated drug trafficking and murder for hire as organized crimes. The readings have helped me to understand what organized crime really is and who is or can be involved. Before now, I would have never associated corruption or extortion with organized crime. I ultimately believed that this was something that was made up for movies and TV shows such as The Godfather, Scarface, The Sopranos, and The Wire. Before watching The Wire, I only associated Italians with organized crime. The characteristics I believe are associated  with organized criminal behavior varies. First, all members of the organization are expected to live by a certain set of rules or a code. They should protect the organization and do what is asked of them by the leaders. I thought the characteristics of organized criminal behavior were similar to that of a gang. The people involved in organized crime may not wear a certain color or live in a certain area but they have the same goal in mind. Protect the group by any means necessary. They have to be loyal to the group, do what they are told by someone else, and do what it takes to make money or a profit for the group. After this first week of class my views on organized crime has changed drastically. I now have a better understanding of what organized crime is and a more knowledge on organized criminal groups. I can let go of all of the stereotypes I may have had and now understand that organized criminal organizations have one goal in mind, make a profit for the organization no matter if it is financial or political. Fans want still more details of their favorite celebrities. Fans want even more details If the expression is intended to mean still, then still is enough: Is anyone still blogging? (Macroeconomics, pg 376) Prior to the stock market crash, the nation was relishing in a state of jubilation. Confidence levels were elevated and the stock market was up. But in actuality, most people in the country did not have the extra money to invest in the market. Those few that did invest increased their buying power by borrowing money (The Great Depression pg 31). However, as banks and businesses reacted to cut costs or declared bankruptcy, unemployment rose at an alarming rate. While the factories were still manufacturing goods, Americans weren't able to afford them and the factories made no money (Drewry and O'connor 559). Another major cause related to farmers. Roosevelt’s presidency the U.S. was in the greatest depths of the depression.
